The use of algorithms in “life-changing” decisions, such as recruitment, should be stopped immediately as they are often “infected with biases”, according to an expert on artificial intelligence.
Noel Sharkey, a professor of AI and robotics at the University of Sheffield, suggested that AI decision-making should be tested in the same way as new pharmaceutical drugs are evaluated before they are released to the market.
He told the Guardian: “There are so many biases happening now, from job interviews to welfare to determining who should get bail and who should go to jail. It is quite clear that we really have to stop using decision algorithm”.
